What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a dynamic environmental specialist to join the Environmental, Health and Safety Team (EHS). The role will support hazardous material and hazardous waste programs primarily at Tesla’s Fremont Factory in Fremont, CA, with the potential to support other manufacturing facilities across the Bay Area. Reporting to the Sr. Environmental Affairs Manager, this role will be responsible for performing complex technical work across hazardous material and waste programs, including tracking and maintaining chemical inventory, preparing hazardous material and waste reports, and ensuring compliance across program requirements. He or she will serve as the internal subject matter expert and advise and influence internal business partners to achieve hazardous material and waste performance goals. Be part of the Tesla EHS Team that builds capacity, provides solutions, and drives continuous improvement throughout the Global Tesla Organization.

What You’ll Do
  • Coordinate and prepare hazardous waste biennial reporting, universal and electronic waste reporting, and SB-14 Waste Reduction Plans. Conduct waste management self-audits and drive continuous improvements in waste segregation and compliance
  • Collect samples of new waste streams generated, characterize waste streams, and partner with the Tesla Hazardous Waste Operations Team to create waste profiles with third party vendors to support disposal requirements
  • Prepare and maintain Hazardous Material Business Plans (HMBP). Partner with internal stakeholders to develop new/improve existing databases for chemicals and hazardous materials. Support response and reporting efforts related to hazardous material spills and reporting. Prepare, update, and administer hazardous material and hazardous waste training content
  • Partner with Fire Engineers, EHS, and manufacturing stakeholders to ensure compliance with hazardous material storage maximum allowable quantities (MAQs). Partner with Design Managers and Fire Engineers on new projects that involve chemical materials to determine material classifications and ensure proper storage
  • Administer chemical approval process using established procedures. Manage the chemical inventory auditing program by partnering with EHS stakeholders. Support inspections and inquiries from regulatory agencies, including EPA, DTSC, CUPAs and local Fire Departments, State and Regional Waterboards, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with proper labeling and placarding across HMIS, NFPA, and GHS requirements as well as California Fire Code as related to CUPA/Fremont Fire Department routine inspections
  • Assist in planning for changes in physical facilities, reviewing new or modified equipment and new manufacturing programs to meet regulatory and company requirements. Develop, track, and report environmental metrics and manage Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Fire Protection Engineering, or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or willingness to obtain
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience supporting hazardous material and/or waste programs;
  • Experience managing regulatory/agency inspections
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced environment, where demands and priorities change rapidly
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Production employees, Engineers, Legal Counsel, Technical Specialists, and Management, cross functionally, in a multi-disciplinary, global environment. Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
